Graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as "Fancy Vivid Pink"—the highest color grade for pink diamonds—this diamond also boasts an Internally Flawless (IF) clarity rating. It belongs to the extremely rare Type IIa category, a class of diamonds that are chemically the purest among all diamond crystals and typically exhibit exceptional optical transparency.In 1999, the rough stone of the Pink Star, weighing 132.5 carats, was mined in South Africa by the De Beers Group. New York-based diamond cutter Steinmetz Diamonds spent 20 months meticulously cutting and polishing it, and the finished diamond made its first public appearance at a ceremony in Monaco on May 29, 2003.
