Historical Origin It originated from the famous Golconda Mine in south-central India, a mine renowned for producing high-quality diamonds. The Princie Diamond was first recorded as part of the collection of the Hyderabad royal family in India—Hyderabad was one of the wealthiest provinces of the Mughal Empire. In 1960, the diamond was sold at auction for the first time under the name "Property of a Gentleman". It was later revealed that this gentleman was the Nizam (ruler) of Hyderabad, and finally, the London branch of Van Cleef & Arpels purchased it for 46,000 British pounds. Naming Origin At a party held at Van Cleef & Arpels’ Paris store, the diamond was named "Princie" in honor of the 14-year-old Prince of Baroda who attended the event. Auction History In 2013, the Princie Diamond was sold for a high price of 39,323,750 US dollars at Christie’s New York auction. Its price per carat reached 1,135,000 US dollars, setting a new record for jewelry auctions at Christie’s at that time. It also became the most expensive Golconda diamond sold as of 2013.
